The mafia of the spanish greyhounds

 Greyhound Racing

30,000 euros for a Greyhound: The black market of these dogs is so significant that two years were recorded in 2000 allegations of theft.
After 8 months of uninterrupted research, with work overtime and weekends, the group SEPRONA Civil Guard managed to arrest 33 people, located in 18 Spanish provinces.

The thieves are working undercover in the world of hunting: identify the best examples, they follow their owners into their homes and threaten them with weapons, rifles and knives.

In the plot also involved the vets who helped remove the microchip identification of dogs, and several times the work was not well executed. Agents have found dogs with torn skin and severe infections caused by the removal of microchips, and animal ears burned to hide the tattoos identity.

Once free of suspicion, the gang gets together to test the quality of the dogs. Where they serve, are mistreated or simply abandoned to their fate.

Operation Harry allowed the recovery of about 200 dogs. The Spanish Federation of Greyhound funded the travel and maintenance costs of the kennels where they await identification. Currently 33 dogs were able reeencontrar their owners.

The ilegal trade of skins

Bellefontaine, Ohio - A gruesome scene was discovered in Logan County by Kyle Holcomb, an official of the Humane Society, on day 30, when he stumbled upon a mass of dead dogs, most of them skinned and dumped in the creek, located near a popular fishing spot near Bellefontaine. According to him, around the corner they felt a horrible stench.
Officials of the Humane Society and several volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene. According to Holcomb, the smell was so strong that they had to use special breathing apparatus to make the search for the remains. They found 14 dead dogs and a cat. Most animals were in a different stage of decomposition, all seemed to be young and most had been cut.
According to an official of the Humane Society, one of the dogs seemed to have been shot while others would have been euthanized. "I had never seen anything like this and I hope never to see, is really horrible," she said, still shaken hours after the discovery. She said there have heard that an illegal trade in dog fur, especially Greyhounds. Found 7 Greyhounds on site, among other races. "The dogs were healthy, appeared to have good weight, the nails had been trimmed, they seemed like pet dogs."
The dogs were transported to the School of Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State University, where they will determine the causes of deaths.

Canine Holocaust

Breeders of racing greyhounds and hunting are in the following motto: "The more a dog suffer, the better the next one will be". Once they reach 2 years of age, all greyhounds are killed by overcoming his physical peak for the "sport" dogs.

"Injections of Sleep" are very expensive, so each year, 50,000 greyhounds (by country) are brutally murdered by different ways:

- Hanging in trees
- Amputation of four paws
- Trip for firearms
- Left to hunger
- "Wheels of Death"

The horrible reality of spanish greyhounds

The Spanish Greyhound has been used almost exclusively as a tool for hunting in Spain. They often live in barns, in numbers greater than 10 dogs and most are almost never sees the light of day.
The focus of the problem is divided into two parts: the creation of Greyhound Spanish indiscriminate disposal and massive and cruel at the end of hunting season, held annually between September and January. Investigations made by WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) in 2001 and 2002 proved that thousands of Spanish Greyhounds are raised annually for the sole purpose of participating in the national championship game, and Medina del Campo its main center.
Before 2001, the end of each season, hunters traditionally hanged their Spanish Greyhounds in the pines on the outskirts of Medina del Campo. The researchers gathered extensive WSPA photographic evidence and made a report on the cruel treatment they were receiving the Spanish Greyhounds. The survey results WSPA conducted in the regions of Castilla y Leon and Castilla la Mancha with the assistance of the Spanish organization Scooby (Scooby ASPCA) show that the ancient tradition of the hanging of dogs in Spain continues today. WSPA estimates that thousands of Spanish Greyhounds are raised and killed annually in rural areas.
Thereafter, due to complaints about the hanging of Greyhounds, the galgueiros began to carry the unwanted dogs to shelters, resulting in around 500 stray dogs at the end of each season, most Greyhound Spanish. For the owners of the Greyhound, the guards are only those who collect your garbage. For them, a Greyhound at the end of hunting season is nothing more than a rubble of what they want to get rid of. The galgueiro takes advantage of the opportunity to pass the buck and thus tries to clear his conscience.
Virtually anyone can create Greyhound Spanish, there is no control by the authorities. The laws governing the subject are not met and no punishment is not applied when they are disrespected. There is no possibility to verify whether these laws are being violated. The creation of Spanish Greyhound is excessive - a population of dogs never get the chance to find a home, so a new direction was taken to attack the evil at its root, which is the campaign against the "indiscriminate creation Greyhound Spanish."

The horror of the hanging after hunting season

When hunting season ends on the hares, the terror begins for these noble animals.
Most Spaniards abandoned Greyhound has been around for two or three years, and usually arrive in poor health. Many are killed by lethal injections before coming to a shelter, where they had the chance to have a more dignified future.
In Spain it is tradition to hang dogs that go wrong in the lower branches, where they suffer a slow, agonizing death known as 'The Pianist' due to the frantic attempt to touch their feet on the ground. Those who run well are hanging from the upper branches, resulting in a faster death. In some nearby towns, people come to complain about the noise of the dogs yelping at night. This practice has its roots in the tradition of the Spanish nobility, when the hunting season was over, the rich landowners who killed his Greyhound with cruelty to prove their status and thereby to impose fear and respect. Do not know why this tradition continues to this day, and there is no law to punish those responsible.
Unwanted greyhounds are also stoned, tied up and left to starve to death, drowned, thrown into wells, burnt with petrol, buried alive, tied to cars and dragged to death, poisoned, shot in the legs lead not to follow their owners, are tortured with sticks in their mouths for not barking. Many who are abandoned in the streets end up being victimized and those who are lucky enough are dropped at shelters. Because of the release of photos of dogs were hanged, many Greyhounds have to be delivered to the shelters, which are overflowing after the hunting season - about 500 greyhounds each season.
Currently, it is illegal to kill a dog by hanging in Andalusia and Extremadura, where there are no animal protection laws. In Castilla y Leon, a law threatening to fine someone to hang a dog waits to be fulfilled.

The theft of Spanish Greyhounds

According to police, the Spanish Greyhound is a breed of dog most stolen in the country. Spanish police mentions the 1200 theft of Greyhounds in 1998, but it is estimated that this number is only the tip of the iceberg, about 20%.
Generally considered a useless hunters declare the theft of a dog that will probably never be found. There should be an identification of animals so that owners could find their dogs in case of theft. Certainly they're only the best runners who are victims of theft, since those who run less are discarded. The guards must assume a kind of mafia behind the theft, as thieves know all too well what the Greyhounds to be taken.
Everyone in Spain know about these distant shelters where they are racing dogs stolen. There are cases Greyhound Spanish stolen during the hunt in the open. Thieves lurk and take the opportunity to catch the dog when it appears. Dogs are taken in cars at high speed, in dangerous operations. Some dogs are sold to farmers and others are used in hunting. According to some galgueiros, dogs are used repeatedly, until complete exhaustion, after being abandoned or worse. It is well known the fate of stolen Greyhounds: they are sent from Castile and from there go south to Madrid, Toledo and Andalusia. Dogs stolen in Toledo going north of Castile and Andalusia in the stolen end up in Extremadura and vice versa. As the greyhounds can not be identified, they never return to their owners.
We convey a story in the world of Greyhound, but without evidence that is true. Hunters who have stolen a greyhound attempt to gain his trust so he would not run away: first he is locked up in complete darkness without any food for two or three days. Then it is fed and have to drink milk mixed with urine from the new owner to move to regard him as their leader.
"This vicious story is the daily end of these animals. It seems extraordinary to see how animals that have spent all their lives get to be so amazing in their kindness when they give the opportunity to be loved. They say the fighting for them who are the best pets out there. Organizations actively working to give them a second chance, and have saved hundreds of them since they started their fight. Just ask for it, to save their lives, seeking host families - often abroad, where you can appreciate the kindness of these animals - and bestow a little love in your deep sorrow. They do it out of conviction, with practically no help, given the indifference of most of us, and the utter passivity of the authorities. Small miracles, such as greyhounds who learn to trust humans, playing with children, to climb on a sofa, to die with some dignity, these little miracles are bits of beauty in this sordid world, and people who shaped devote their time and effort to that cruelty does not succeed completely. We appeal to the conscience of their owners, administrations, which have allowed the abuse with impunity. We who know nothing about the vicious life and death of these animals. Occasionally there are those rare moments where one can scratch something resembling good. Or at least to define evil. This is one of them. The Greyhounds are evil, but still could get worse if nobody prevents it. And certainly, when that beauty can learn to love and be loved! We want to help them! Let's stop it? "

Cruelty all over the world

United States

The number of greyhounds killed every year in the United States ranges from 30 to 50 000. 50% of dogs are killed before they ever reach the slopes. About 100,000 rabbits and other small animals are used as bait in training the Greyhounds, who are encouraged to pursue them and kill them. The less aggressive dogs are locked in a cage with one of these little animals and are just released or fed after killing the prey. According to the article "Running not to die" published in The Animals Agenda, May 1986, "it is estimated that at least 90% of Greyhounds coaches believe that the use of live bait is necessary to teach their pets to chase a mechanical lure , because they believe this way will have better performance. " In the United States, many kennels have cages stacked on two floors, with females generally at a higher level, and males below. Many dogs spend their entire lives locked up in these kennels. Greyhounds as often compete in several different tracks during his career, they are transported from one to another canódromo huddled in vans or trailers aluminum airless. The transport over long distances in poor conditions often cause dehydration, weight loss, exhaustion and even death.
Britain
Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) is supposedly a nation of animal lovers. Most households have a pet and more than a quarter of them have a dog. However, the fate of greyhounds who participate in racing is extremely cruel. A dog has a life expectancy of 14 years or more, but a Greyhound racing does not live more than five years. Only a lucky minority able replacement in homes at the end of his career. Most, however, is killed in the first years of his life and it is estimated that 12,000 greyhounds suffer this fate every year. For many the end means death in a slaughterhouse dirty with a shot in the head by a mere 10 pounds. The animals that tend to give excessive profits to developers and end their day punters murdered and dumped in the bush. According to the official policy of the National Greyhound Racing Club (NGRC), dogs must be placed in homes at the end of his career, but only 3,000 of the 10,000 officers used clues in the UK every year can find a home. However, the NGRC takes no position on the slaughter of healthy Greyhounds and is proud of this activity, which is the second largest sports event and generates billions of pounds in bets.

Ireland

Greyhounds in Ireland are raised in mass and can not be adopted to the same extent. Reports of cruelty are diverse, they are found in large numbers abandoned on the streets, subjected to torture and maltreatment. The adoption centers are full of greyhounds waiting for homes. Even recently found Greyhounds (some alive, some not) with mutilated ears so that the owners were not identified because of the chip. In the news, find subjects such as children aged 10 to 12 years torturing a Greyhound abandoned, and children 7 to 8 years betting on races. In 2006 it was reported the case of a music store that sold tambourines made with skin Greyhounds. Greyhounds also are designed to be exported to various countries to be used in the supposed "sport". The transport conditions are atrocious and after a short career in these countries, dogs still suffer abandonment, torture and death. The RSPCA - British Association Protective Cruelty to Animals released a report on 21/07/2004, reporting that 36 Greyhounds were exported from Ireland for sale in Barcelona. The dogs arrived thirsty, hungry and battered after a trip where they remained caged for over 30 hours in poor conditions. The dogs did a 1200 km path to the final destination - Spain, divided into 20 tiny cages where they could hardly stand, traveling by rail and then by trucks muggy, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees. Unfortunately this was not an isolated case. The canódromo Barcelona was closed in 2006 and the Greyhounds Irish (as well as Spanish), were at the mercy of fate. In the shelters in Spain may be found Irish Greyhounds waiting for adoption, and there have been a case of them survived despite serious injuries due to hanging.

From Australia to Asia

The racing industry in Australian Greyhounds imposes a sad end to their dogs: they end their days in laboratories for vivisection or are exported to countries like Korea, Vietnam and China, with plans to create race tracks throughout Cambodia and the Philippines. These countries are notorious for the barbaric acts of torture and killing dogs for human consumption, where there is no hope or possibility of a donation or replacement for retired Greyhounds. The fate of Australian greyhounds in Asia is inhumane and, as widely exposed by the media, these wonderful dogs are ending their days being exterminated by the industry of dog meat, or simply being dumped into landfill. Like all dogs, Greyhounds deserve to be protected. Until the stakes races are banned, the dogs continue to face the sad fate that awaits them: oblivion, abandonment and death. It's time to say "enough"! Please join your voice to the growing chorus of people who believe it is wrong to treat the Greyhounds so cruel.
